Spectral geology is the measurement and analysis of portions of the electromagnetic spectrum to identify spectrally distinct and physically significant features of different rock types and surface materials, their mineralogy and their alteration signatures. Spectral techniques can be used also to detect hydrocarbons present in the water column and on the sea surface as well as dissolved organic matter and living micro-organisms. Because many materials absorb radiation at specific wavelengths it is possible to identify them by their characteristic absorption features, which appear as troughs in a spectral curve.
